Modify (2005)

I recently watched this documentary by Jason Gary and Greg Jacobson, as it discusses stories by people that modify their bodies, and consider this as a way of life. It deliberates the way people do this, be it as a form of art, or out of vanity.
I found that I couldn't watch the whole film because it was so graphic and really quite gruesome. I did however really like the opening sequence of this film.

Various animated versions of the films title 'modify' pass across the screen in numerous directions and different fonts. They are intercut with sections of the credits. The sound used in this section is a constant, repetitive beat that evolves as the sequence does. I like this idea and think that it would be nice to have something similar in my own piece.
The subject of this documentary bares similar themes to my project on tattooing, and references some interesting thoughts on addiction and the reasoning behind why people modify their bodies. The fact that I couldn't face watching the film however, proves that the graphic detail in some scenes may have limited its audience. For my own film, although we plan to show quite an 'up close' view of the tattoo needle, it isn't particularly gruesome.. and after all, we need this to demonstrate how it is done to the audience.
